Dr. Phillip Serna serves as double bass & viola da gamba faculty at Valparaiso University and North Central College, double bass, viola da gamba and viol consort at the Music Institute of Chicago and serves as assistant director and sponsor of viol consorts and Illinois’ first public-school period-instrument program at Adlai E. Dr. Serna endeavors to instill a positive sense of musical professionalism, responsibility, a strong work ethic, and personal integrity. Due to the upheaval in 2020 of the Coronavirus Pandemic, Dr. Serna has moved all private instruction online utilizing the Zoom video conferencing platform so that wherever you are in the world, you can always have your instruction brought to you in the comfort & safety of your own home

Online Music Lesson Policies

Stevenson High SchoolUntil now, there has been a lot of resistance to the idea that quality music instruction can happen without face-to-face in-person instruction. There are many added conveniences that come with the flexibility of online scheduling & instruction. Without having to leave home or fight traffic, the convenience of online instruction has never been clearer.

Lesson Fees

If using the form below to schedule ongoing instruction, you only need to pay for your 1st lesson at point of purchase with the expectation that all fees will be paid by the end of the month or incur an additional 10% late-fee.

Cancellation & Rescheduling

To be eligible for rescheduling, a lesson must be cancelled no less than 24 hours of the lesson start time. Emergencies to occur & will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis as needed. Dr. Serna will always endeavor to to have respect for your time as a high priority.

Viola da Gamba Lessons via Zoom

Dr. Serna has been teaching viola da gamba for over a decade now – working with a variety of ages in private instruction & group settings. Private instruction lays a strong foundation for building technique, listening skills and confidence – on any instrument. Dr. Serna prides himself on being an efficient problem-solver, helping students build positive practice habits & self-empowerment. Lessons can vary from 30 minutes, 45 minutes to 60 minutes, depending on the needs of the student. Some students sometimes benefit from a longer session. Dr. Serna offers a variety of scheduling options & pricing for every budget & interest level. Included with private viola da gamba instruction is a free subscription to Consorts-Minus-One, Phillip Serna’s high-quality music-minus-one recordings of viol consort music – yours for the duration of instruction.
